Managing Your Poker Bankroll
April 24, 2008
Properly managing your bankroll, is perhaps the single most important aspect of a professional poker player. It is understood that you are probably not looking to seek out a new profession of poker … but it’s still very important as a poker player of any kind to have a good poker bankroll management. If you are serious about poker at all, it will be needed. For those who are not serious about the game, it’s less important but don’t ignore it.
Managing your bankroll is like managing a company or business. You have to be aware of everything that is going on, and make changes when needed. Poker is the same way, especially with your bankroll. You have to know what is going in and coming out at all times. You must be able to manage paying yourself and building your bankroll at the same time. All of these things are needed in order to manage a bankroll.
Are you playing part time, full time or just for Fun ?
The first thing you will need to do is decide what you want from poker. Do you want to make a part time income, full time income or do you just play for fun. Depending on the answer to the questions,
you may want need to manage better than others. If you are going to make an income from poker, you
must be able to keep good records and make sure everything is running smoothly. Paying yourself is
obviously a key point to doing what you are doing. You cannot just take all of your poker money and
use it to pay bills. Even if you started out with a free poker bankroll you’ll have to keep money in your bankroll (to continue making more) and still have money to take out for personal use.
The best way to do this would be to divide up the money accordingly. Decide what percentage will go into your personal account and what percentage will go back into your bankroll. For example, you might
want to put 30% back into your bankroll and 70% into your personal account. For every $100 you make,
you will pocket $70 and put another $30 back into your bankroll. If you decide you really want to raise
the limits, you might put a lot more back into your bankroll and pay yourself less. All of this is an
important part of properly managing your bankroll.
